ACCESS TO MUSIC: southend |
|
| |
Access to Music’s music courses are run from Nightfly Studios on the west side of Southend, about ten minutes walk from the town centre. The professional setting of this provision provides a work-related learning environment for students and opportunities to engage in local projects.
The centre features fully-equipped band rehearsal rooms, a digital recording studio, a music technology suite and teaching rooms. Access to Music has been running courses in Southend for a number of years and has built up a strong tutor team led by Gerard Esser and James Tyler, the centre managers.
A strong culture of performance is integral to the centre, which is evident in their band, Shed Boat Shed, reaching the Regional Finals of Atom Live this summer. |

Esser on TV
Esser’s music has already been pounced on by huge brands such as Pepsi and popular TV shows EastEnders, Hollyoaks and Skins, to name just a few. And now, monster technology company Hewlett- Packard has become next in line to snap him up as his track Headlock is featured in the new advert.
Ben Esser studied at the Southend centre and on the Artist Development course at the British Academy of New Music.
X-factor finalist to visit Southend students
Austin Drage, a finalist in last year’s X-Factor competition visited students at the centre on Saturday 14 November as part of the centre’s National Open day. Since his X-Factor success, Austin has been building his solo career and is currently writing songs with ex-Access to Music student Colin Wyatt. Centre manager Gerard said:
'Austin was great. He was just like one of the students and he didn't want to leave! They all jammed together and he chatted to the students about his experiences of the music industry so far.'
Prodigy Guitarist visits Southend students
Students at Access to Music in Southend were treated to a visit by world renowned guitarist Jim Davies, ex-guitarist from The Prodigy and Pitchshifter. Jim played guitar with The Prodigy on top ten hits such as Firestarter and Breathe. He visited the centre in October and delivered two seminar/workshops. Students had the chance to ask questions about his vast experience as a musician and music journalist.
