YOUR CHANCE TO TRAIN ON A MUSIC APPRENTICESHIP

Young musicians in Manchester and Norwich have an opportunity to train on a unique freelance music apprenticeship with Access to Music.

The training scheme, which starts in January, will induct musicians aged 16-18 in becoming self-employed musicians, producers or technicians. The programme is part of the government’s national Apprenticeships scheme fronted by Sir Alan Sugar. In a climate of increasing youth unemployment they offer an attractive solution to building the first steps in a career.

Martin Smith of Access to Music said: ‘This is a great way for young aspiring musicians to really learn the commercial skills to operate successfully in a fast-changing music industry. The training, which is free of any tuition fees, mixes qualification-based learning with real practical work experience. It is an exciting and relevant way of gaining the right skills’.

‘We have an experienced team of tutors and professional mentors who will guide the apprentices on their journey and we have numerous contacts in many areas of the music scene’.

Budding apprentices must be musicians, producers or technicians aged 16-18 with some experience who are dedicated to taking the next step on their musical journey. No formal academic qualifications are required.

MORE INFO

Music Apprenticeships are offered at Access to Music Manchester
and at Access to Music Norwich.

Freelance Music Apprenticeships are offered at Level 3 (A Level equivalent) and run for two years.

The focus is on gaining the skills to operate as a self-employed musician or music entrepreneur, such as being a performing musician, running a venue or being a sound engineer

Training consists of a combination of programme-led course work (which leads to a Level 3 Rockschool/ATM qualification) and actual self-employment during which apprentices will be expected to generate income streams.

The whole process is monitored by a professional mentor who will advise apprentices on their career and business development.

The apprenticeships are funded by the Learning & Skills Council and are supported by the Musicians' Union, Association of Independent Music, Rockschool and Creative & Cultural Skills.

This is an exciting and attractive alternative to conventional course-based training and is ideal for those with a passion to get on in the music industry who are keen to get to grips with the realities of being in the music business.
