On Wednesday 2nd December on a cold (and wet) winter’s evening, in the heart of London, the Mermaid Theatre played host once again to a night of fantastic new music, glitz, glamour, awards and graduations. Hosted by the lovely Lauren Laverne (originally of Kenickie fame, now a co-presenter on the BBC Culture Show and BBC 6 radio presenter) the night celebrated the achievements of Access to Music students this year.
Students travelled in from afar; not only from Access to Music’s centres but many students and staff from our partner centres also joined us for the special event.
In between the awards the audience was treated to some fantastic performances from Access to Music students. Soundtrack to Your Summer kicked off the night: a 4-piece pop-punk band from Manchester who filled the theatre with energy from the word go! A great start to the night!
Next up was Albert Gold who brought something very different to the table, later saying that performing at the Awards was one of the best feelings in his life so far- he certainly convinced the audience this was the case, with beautiful and spine tingling vocals accompanied by acoustic guitar.
After more awards the audience were transported to Belfast and treated to the traditional sounds of the Irish Bodhran from dynamic acoustic folk rock duo Scorpion Jack.
Scuffed up Shoes impressed the audience as front man Jakey sang about love, age, losing your virginity and the injustice of it all- a very entertaining set!
After collecting her award Sarah Louise took to the stage under the name of Alexa Merlot, supported by the Artist Development Session Musician Band led by Tutor Nathan Williams. She entertained the audience with a mix of covers and her own Prince inspired material.
The final act of the night was a collaboration between Lee Thorpe and Katie Tomcyznska, Turn Back to Spring, the winners of the Michael Kamen Award. They not only impressed the audience with strong vocals and a fantastic performance but also shone as true professionals, battling technical difficulties minutes before they were due on!
A massive congratulations to all the students who won awards and graduated at this years Awards Ceremony. We look forward to seeing a whole set of new faces next year.
