Norwich band Monroes were recently selected to support indie darlings The View at a sell out gig at Norwich’s UEA. The Monroes were called in after the band's original support slot cancelled at the last minute and a search was launched on Radio 1’s Jo Whiley show to find a replacement.
Acts were asked to submit demo CDs to the band's tour bus during the day, with The View making the final decision as to who would warm up the crowds for them.
Monroes are Jamie Delaney (guitar/vocals), David Jarmy (bass/vocals) and Lenny Rout (drums/vocals). Lenny and David study with ATM in Norwich.
Drummer Lenny says: “We, along with many other bands in and around Norwich handed in our CD at midday, as soon as we heard the Radio 1 appeal. We were told that we would know if we got to support them by about 4 o'clock. So we waited, and bang on 4 o'clock we got a phone call from The View asking if we would like to support them that night! We headed straight to the venue, and were really pleased to find out that we had been chosen out of 91 demos! The gig itself went really well, and the crowd seemed to accept us and enjoy every minute! It was a sold out show with over 1500 people.
We have had quite a bit of interest since the gig. We've been on the BBC website, had quite a few good reviews and our Myspace page has had over 1000 hits per day since the gig!”
Monroes were recently featured in the NME who said: “The frantic sound of Monroes owes quite a large debt to bands such as The Jam, Madness, The Cure and The Police, while their live shows are always guaranteed to leave sweaty bodies in their wake. These boys definitely love to entertain.”
