CONNECTING ACROSS DIFFERENCE I: DRAKE PROJECT

Organisation: Drake Music in partnership with Furtherfield.org

Role: Music technologist

Approx 23 days

Drake Music is seeking to commission a music technologist to facilitate key aspects their forthcoming project, Connecting Across Difference. The music technologist will work closely with, and assist the lead musician and creative team in delivering a series of music workshops with young musicians, from mainstream and special schools, at primary and secondary level in the borough of Tower Hamlets. The season of workshops will culminate in a in a mixed media masque or opera at Bethnal Green Museum of Childhood, co-created and performed by all participants in March 2009.

The theme for the season Connecting Across Difference is intended to catalyse imaginative and playful explorations of the joys and the strains (or challenges) of encountering, communicating and coming to know people who are different.

This role would suit a musician with excellent music technology skills who is excited by the creative possibilities of exchange and collaboration between musicians. For more details, please see the full brief.

Drake Music is seeking to engage an artist-mentor to facilitate and support the creative and professional development of three musicians/mentees who will be working with the artistic team to develop their forthcoming project, Connecting Across Difference.

Throughout the project (October 08-March 09) the mentor will work closely with the creative team, which will include a lead musician/composer, a visual artist,a music technologist and three disabled musicians/artists who are interested in developing their practice and gaining experience in working in outreach and education.

Connecting Across Difference consists of a series of workshops with young musicians, from mainstream and special schools, at primary and secondary level in the borough of Tower Hamlets. The season of workshops will culminate in a in a mixed media masque or opera at Bethnal Green Museum of Childhood, co-created and performed by all participants in March 2009.

The placement, working within an independent music PR company, will last for three months from end July until end Sept 2008, with a view to extending/promotion if appropriate. The successful candidate will provide administrative support for the Head of Press and Press Officer, including mail outs, maintenance and development of mailing lists, chasing reactions, securing press reviews, and brainstorming creative press ideas.

SURFACE UNSIGNED

The Surface Unsigned Festival is a national live music event that brings unsigned bands and artists to the attention of all aspects of the music industry. The Surface Unsigned Festival is the largest event of its kind and is a major event in the unsigned music calendar.

Surface Unsigned is working in association with Marshall, Kerrang, Zildjian, Tama, Evans, Planet Waves, Ashdown, D’addario, PMT, Dawsons, Univibe Audio, Music Live and Oxjam to develop alternative ways for bands to gain exposure, develop their fan base and attain success.

2008
Surface Unsigned Festival events in 2008 will be held in the North (Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds), the Midlands (Birmingham, Wolverhampton) and the South (London, Reading, Brighton) making it the biggest event of its kind. In 2008 there will be over 300 nights of live music across the UK. Bands that reach the National Showcase on the 13th September, 2008 will perform infront of a commitee of music industry experts. Surface Unsigned and our sponsors will award chosen bands with endorsements, prizes and recording deals.

2009
In 2009 Surface Unsigned will be expanding to further parts of the UK. Events will be held in Scotland (Glasgow, Edinburgh), the Northwest (Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds), the Midlands (Birmingham, Wolverhampton), Avon and South Wales (Bristol, Cardiff) and the Southeast (London, Reading, Brighton) making it the biggest event of its kind. In 2009 there will be over 500 nights of live music across the UK. For bands that reach the final stages of the festival, both Surface Unsigned and our sponsors will award the best musicians with prizes, studio time and endorsement deals.

INTERN AT BAD SNEAKERS RECORDS

Based at their office in Leeds, UK (situated above The Faversham music venue), the placement will last for three months from July until September 2008.

The successful candidate will be involved in providing administrative support and also helping to drive various projects covering all aspects of record label and artist management, including online promotion and marketing, PR, building band and label awareness, band merchandise, brainstorming creative ideas, booking and promoting gigs and researching synchronisation opportunities.

The internship will be on a voluntary basis, but basic travel and subsistence expenses (to be agreed) will be covered.

YOAV - REMIX OPPORTUNITY

Yoav, the phenomenal talent signed to Island Records via Rollo Armstrongs Field Recordings, is releasing a new EP of remixes on July 21st called Charmed and Rearranged. It features a number of new versions of Adore Adore, the first track on his acclaimed album Charmed and Strange.

You may have seen him on Later With Jools Holland last week, performing his recent single Club Thing.

To mark the release of this EP, Island are running a competition with a fantastic prize. ATM students are being given the opportunity to remix Adore Adore themselves. The best remix submitted will feature on the b-side of a future single!

The parts, and all details on the competition, will be available to students from Monday 16th June, and the competition will be open until September 1st. e.

WANT TO GET ON RADIO?

3 students from Bristol have landed their own radio show on www.bcfm.org.uk. Sam Coles, Ross Davies and Guy Large produce and present 'It's Not Real', a radio show initially devised for the Radio Programming unit. BCFM were so pleased with the output that they have offered them a regular slot. You can tune in online at www.bcfm.org.uk every Tuesday between 4-5pm.

DIGI DESIGN & M-AUDIO MERCHANDISING SPECIALISTS

Digidesign and M-Audio are looking to recruit part time Merchandising Specialists to work in several of the major music stores in various locations in the North of England

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Developing relationships and educating in-store sales staff;
  • 1-1 demonstrations of Digidesign Pro Tools LE and M-Audio products;
  • Maintaining demo systems and ensuring that the store has all current available information released by the company;
  • Making sure Digidesign and M-Audio marketing collateral (posters/brochures) is visible, up to date and useable.

Ideal candidates should be enthusiastic and well informed about Digidesign and M-Audio products. Though some training will be given, applicants must already have a good understanding of Pro Tools software and related hardware products, a good understanding of Torq will also be advantageous.

Other requirements include: Ability to demonstrate Pro Tools LE or M-Powered software for the beginner user, competence in providing accurate product information to sales associates and the ability to assist customers with purchase decisions. Individuals must have a professional, outgoing personality that will allow them to interact and network with sales associates and customers on a regular basis

This role will require flexibility and you will work up 8-12 hours per week maximum, with some of these hours being undertaken on Saturdays. Being able to drive and have a car is also an advantage. The position offers a competitive hourly wage and the opportunity to buy discounted Digidesign/M-Audio products for personal use.

VOLUNTEERS WANTED FOR CHARITY FESTIVAL

The Riverside Festival is one of the UK's most successful independent not-for-profit charity festivals with an attendance of around 12-16,000 people. It offers four stages of live music together with a variety of arts and kids activities and a fantastic beer festival run from a 200 foot bar. It is held in Stamford in the East Midlands.

Lets Go Global is a pioneering community media project: an arts-led, internet TV channel run by and for the local and diverse communities of Trafford and Greater Manchester. The project forms part of Trafford Council's Arts & Cultural Development Section.

Having secured further funding from the Greater Manchester Strategic Arts Fund, Lets Go Global's Pixelate Project is ready to deliver a second phase of creative ICT activity bringing together artists and technology to empower communities across Greater Manchester.

We are seeking an eager and forward-thinking technician to take forward the success of this exciting and innovative project. Working in a small team, you will have excellent communication skills, experience of sharing your expertise within a community setting, a flexible work approach and an aptitude and enthusiasm for new and emerging technologies.

The post requires knowledge and experience of media streaming technologies, web based content management systems, broadband connectivity, networking, maintaining ICT and media equipment & knowledge of web 2.0, open source software & social networking tools.
